A modern makeover for Arnhem’s literary icon.
Reimagining a Classic Bookstore.
Since 1895, Hijman Ongerijmd has been a beloved part of Arnhem’s city center—a bookstore that celebrates literature and the local community. When they approached me to redesign their visual identity, my goal was to honor their long-standing presence while introducing a modern twist. The result is a full rebranding, including new typography and custom illustrations. This new design now appears throughout the store, from wrapping paper to bookmarks and even a mural inside the shop.
Illustrations that work as a whole or can be used separately.
The illustrations reflect the store of Hijman Ongerijmd, capturing the activities and interactions within the bookstore. They feature book lovers lost in stories, custommers overloaded with books and references to the store's workshops and events. Designed to be versatile, these illustrations work as a cohesive pattern or as standalone elements for various applications.
Turning an idea into reality.
The highlight of this project was the mural. Initially, I photoshopped the illustrations onto a wall for fun, but the client loved the idea so much that they wanted to make it a reality. The result is a black-and-white mural that now serves as a striking centerpiece in the store. It was great that the people at Hijman Ongerijmd were so excited to bring this idea to life!
