Giving a face to spoken word organisation Mensen Zeggen Dingen.

Mensen Zeggen Dingen began a decade ago in Nijmegen and Arnhem, and has since grown into one of Netherlands' leading spoken word platform. With regular events in cities like Utrecht, Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Leiden, Nijmegen, The Hague, and Den Bosch, they bring spoken word to stages nationwide. In addition to their city events, they also organize festival tours, sharing their vibrant performances with audiences across the country.

A Longstanding Collaboration.

Since 2015, I’ve had the privilege of shaping the visual identity for Mensen Zeggen Dingen. What began as a simple request—to create an adaptable artwork by changing the colors for each edition—quickly evolved into something much bigger. I initially designed a character whose colors and mouth changed with each event. But I couldn’t resist pushing the concept further, and it soon grew into a signature style featuring quirky, illustrated characters.

Every edition a new illustration.

For every edition, I created a new illustration, blending characters with objects to form a playful visual language. This process became both a creative playground for me and a distinct style for the platform. With each new event, I strive to push boundaries, creating characters that are bolder, funnier, and more imaginative—sometimes inspired by the performers’ poetry, but often born from my own spontaneous ideas. Over time, this approach has resulted in a huge collection of unique, recognizable designs.

Over the years, we’ve produced on a wide array of deliverables: posters, banners, flyers, stage visuals, merchandise, annual reports, and more. We also designed their website. This platform serves as a hub for the spoken word community, featuring profiles of performers, event schedules, news updates, and detailed information about the organization. It also includes a fully integrated shop for Mensen Zeggen Dingen merchandise.
